Demon Track Has Record-Breaking Season

Demon Track Has Record-Breaking Season

The Demons are kicking it into gear as the track and field season winds down, with only two meets left before the state championship (as of May 9).

At the Richard Harper Invitational at Albuquerque Academy on April 26 and 27, two school records were broken. In the 4×100 meter relay, the team of Bryce Melton, Cy Anderson, Valin Wittenburg, and Sev Kofler ran a combined time of 41.84, setting a school record.

In the 4×400 meter relay, the team of Cy Anderson, Daniel Busemeyer, Valin Wittenburg, and Sev Kofler ran a combined time of 3:17.40. Their time was the fastest in 5A this season. Their time also destroyed the school record by 4 seconds.

Daniel Busemeyer also qualified for state in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.04.

Coach Peter Graham was happy with the results of the meet. “We got through with pretty much everybody not getting dinged up,” he also. “People finished the races and got to run. So I’m happy with that.”

This follows the Capital City meet hosted at Santa Fe High on April 20. At that meet, Noah Mullins won both the pole vault and long jump and Chris Rivera finished fourth in 800.

On the girls’ side, Ceci Patelena and Makayla Gonzales placed second and third in the 100-meter dash. Makayla also placed third in the 200-meter dash.

Zavia Burton won the 300-meter hurdles, and Ruby Sallah placed third in the 100-meter hurdles.

The girls’ 4×100 meter relay team of Ria Baker, Makalya Gonzales, Zavia Burton, and Ceci Pattelena placed first. The girls’ 4×400 meter relay team of Ria Baker, Mia Schelman, Anna Auer, and Emily Pearson placed second. The girls’ 4×800 meter relay team of Ada Armstrong, Addi Pattelena, Anna Auer, and Mia Schelman placed second.

Mia Schelman placed third in the pole vault.

Another record fell at the Larry Baca Invitational on May 4, with the 4x 200 meter relay. The team of Cy Anderson, Valin Wittenburg, and Sev Kofler ran a time of 1:26.81. This time broke the school record by two seconds and qualified for the state championships by six seconds.

The 5-A district meet will be on Sat, May 11 at Nusenda Community Stadium.
