Tira Barral is an education assistant who works with visually impaired (VI) students. She joined the staff of Santa Fe High in 2018.

Originally from Hollywood, Calif., Ms. Barral went to college at California State University, Northridge, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

I became an educational assistant, about six years ago, so I could have the same hours, holidays and summertime off as my kids. I worked with fifth graders for a year, and then I was transferred to Life Skills for two years. Even though I liked the students I worked with, my strengths are working with the VI students” Tira explains.

She has come to like being a VI aide. “I like what I do,” she explains. “About four years ago, I took an online training course in Braille, and I continue to practice it every day at work. The VI girls I work with are always there to help me if I stumble on a word or phrase. I enjoy spending time with the kids; they are very funny.”

Ms. Barral spends her free time with her husband and two children. She also enjoys traveling between New Mexico and California with her family. “When we travel to California, we visit our relatives and friends. Most days we head out to Zuma Beach. The beach is the place we miss the most.” She says, “I moved from California 11 years ago to New Mexico with my family, and we love it!”
