Although President Trump’s approval ratings are just over 50 percent, which is actually higher than President Obama’s at the same point in his presidency according to the Washington Examiner, many people advocate for his impeachment. One of the loudest voices is that of Tom Steyer, a billionaire Democratic donor who is running a campaign calling for Trump’s impeachment.

On Steyer’s campaign website, NeedToImpeach.com, he argues that Trump has brought America to the brink of nuclear war, is mentally unfit for office, has taken money from foreign governments, and has obstructed justice. At this point, he argues, Congress has the right to act.

Steyer has spread his message all across social media on platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. He also had ads aired on Fox News until the network pulled them. (Steyer has accused Fox of breach of contract after they pulled his $10 million ad off the air.) In all, Steyer has spent at least $40 million on his campaign, and he shows no signs of stopping.

In an interview with The New York Times, Steyer stated that he found Trump to be “lawless and unfit for office,” yet he still acknowledged the “practical obstacles to impeachment” and said raising a popular outcry was a necessary first step.

Many democratic leaders such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have urged Steyer to tone down his campaign, even stating on television that impeachment is an impractical idea. In recent weeks, however, Steyer has only intensified his campaign, bringing feelings of anger and uncertainty to members of his own party.

Steyer’s campaign grew in ferocity after he revealed his plan to push liberal lawmakers into endorsing impeachment. Steyer has racked up a staggering 4,000,000 signatures on an impeachment petition and is currently urging voters to call congressional offices and lobby for support, according to The New York Times.

Democrats have acknowledged that Steyer has brought impeachment into mainstream conversation. Of course, not all Democrats are against Steyer’s campaign. For example, Al Green, a representative for Texas’s Ninth Congressional District, agrees with Steyer’s claim that Trump has obstruced Justice. Green and another congressman, Brad Sherman, have filed an article of impeachment of their own.

Democrats are not the only ones calling for impeachment. Mary Barzee Flores, a former circuit court judge seeking a Republican-held seat, stated in an interview, “Like a lot of people, I am appalled by the president’s conduct in office.… I do believe he’s got to go. He’s dangerous.”

Steyer said of his campaign, “We’re just telling the truth to the American people, and it’s an important truth, and if you don’t think it’s politically convenient for you, that’s too bad.”

Mr. Dotts, a government teacher at SFHS, said, “Trump has done some things worthy of impeachment,” noting the alleged ties between Russia and some of Trump’s campaign members. But, he added, “Vice President Pence may be worse than Trump, and impeachment could make things worse.”
