With the election coming up fast you might have some last minute, unanswered questions about our candidates. Well, worry no longer because here are some important topics that should be known about our 2016 presidential election candidates.

In case you didn’t know, the Democratic nominee is Hillary Clinton, and the Republican nominee is Donald Trump. Jill Stein is the Green Party nominee, and Gary Johnson is the Libertarian nominee.

Abortion

Abortion has been a largely debated topic for a long time. Donald Trump is pro-life. In an interview with ontheissues.org, Trump said, “I hate the concept of abortion. And what happened is friends of mine years ago were going to have a child, and it was going to be aborted. And it wasn’t aborted. And that child today is a total superstar, a great, great child. And I saw other instances. And I am very, very proud to say that I am pro-life.” Trump also believes that Planned Parenthood should be defunded.

Hillary Clinton is pro-choice, saying, “I will defend women’s rights to make their own healthcare decisions.” She went on to say, “I can tell you the government has no business in the decisions that women make with their families in accordance with their faith, (and) with medical advice and I will stand up for that right.”

Jill Stein is also pro-choice, believing that birth control, sex education and social services could help reduce the number of abortions. Stein says, “By providing women with reproductive healthcare and family planning, as part of a program of health care as a human right, we can greatly reduce abortion.”

Gary Johnson is pro-choice as well, letting his supporters know that it is the woman’s right to choose, not the government’s. He says, “I support women’s rights to choose up until the viability of the fetus. I’ve supported counseling and I’ve supported the notion that public funds not be used for abortion.” Johnson does want to put an end to late-term abortions.

Death Penalty

Trump supports the death penalty, saying that stricter punishment will reduce crime. He believes that in cases of police killing, the perpetrators should definitely receive the death penalty. Trump states, “These two animals shot the cops and these were two wonderfully young cops and you know you don’t see rioting when the cops get shot.” He continued by saying, “Now these two people are gunned down by these two thugs, and I will say thugs, and they should get the death penalty absolutely.”

Clinton stands against the death penalty. Confronted about the topic at a fundraiser, Clinton said, “You know, this is such a profoundly difficult question. And what I have said — and what I continue to believe — is that the states have proven themselves incapable of carrying out fair trials that give any defendant all of the rights a defendant should have, all of the support a defendant’s lawyer should have. And I have said I would breathe a sigh of relief if either the Supreme Court or the states, themselves, begin to eliminate the death penalty.”

Johnson opposes the death penalty, realizing that the government makes mistakes and could wrongly accuse someone. Johnson says, “As the Governor of New Mexico, I was a bit naïve and I did not think the government made mistakes with regard to the death penalty. I came to realize that they do. I don’t want to put one innocent person to death and punish 99 who are guilty.”

Stein also opposes the death penalty, stating, “America’s experience shows capital punishment does not effectively stop crimes from being committed.”

Gun Control

Trump is a very big Second Amendment supporter. He believes that there should be no gun laws, and that guns are not the problem. With the topic of mentally ill people being brought up, Trump states, “No matter what you’ll have people that are mentally ill and they have problems and they’re going to slip through the cracks.” The National Rifle Association endorses Trump, who assures the group he would protect Second Amendment rights.

Clinton wants to take some precautions when it comes to gun control. She wants to expand background checks, take on the gun lobby, and keeps guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, violent criminals, and domestic abusers. She states, “I know we are a smart enough nation to figure out how you protect responsible gun owners and get guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.”

Johnson states, “If you outlaw guns, criminals will have guns. Gun control sounds terrific, but at the end of the day it makes this country less safe. This is the Second Amendment.” (The Second Amendment allows us the right to bear arms.)

Stein believes that there has to be a necessary ban on assault weapons, along with other steps. She states, “So, we need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. We need background checks, so that the mentally ill are not possessing and using guns. And we need to end the gun show loopholes, as well, because there’s far too much violence from guns, which is not needed.” Gun show loopholes are the sales of firearms by private sellers.
