What’s special about the 2019-2020 school year? The yearbook crew and Ms. Ramirez are working hard to capture that.

“We’re really working on trying to get a story this year, adding more depth to the book in terms of what’s making our school unique this year,” says Ms. Ramirez, who is teaching the class for the first time.

The 200-page yearbook is, as of March 10, about 10 days from the deadline. The crew, and especially the editors — Jojo Romero-Kleve, Marissa Peinado, Estrella Montaño, and Allyson Anaya, and Julius Sanchez — are working on finalizing the layouts and also creating a marketing campaign.

In the class, which is held during first and third periods, each student is given a couple of topics that they are required to cover and then create a layout for.

“Everyone can cover about one or two spreads,” explains Ms. Ramirez. “It’s their responsibility to report and take photos.”

One of the challenges is making sure that it’s not just the same people shown throughout the yearbook. “We are trying to get as many students’ faces as we can, trying to get meaningful shots,” Ms. Ramirez says.

To create the yearbook, the students use InDesign, an Adobe layout program. A Canadian company, Friesens, prints the books, which should be available in late April. The 2020 yearbooks cost $40. They can be purchased online with a credit card, or with cash in BC-004.
