Call of Duty is one of the best-selling video game franchises in history and has excelled over the past 12 years since its first game was released. Its newest game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, released on Oct. 24, has a big chance of being successful.

Recently, the franchise has had a few bumpy years with games that its fans were not altogether pleased with, such as with Infinite Warfare, WW2, and Black Ops 4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has to succeed. If it doesn’t, the franchise will lose its popularity.

Call of Duty tends to change the timeline of games, going into a future setting, then WWII, and then back to a future setting a year later. With this new version, the campaign story takes off with a terrorist group stealing chemical weapons from the Russian military. Soon after, a terrorist attack happens in London with many casualties, and the U.S. eventually gets involved, along with the U.K., to find the cause of this terrorist organization.

The multiplayer has some pros and cons that the player-base is raging about. Starting off with the pros, there is so much content to work toward and unlock, such as weapon camos and different variants that make the weapons look really interesting. The graphics also have amazing detail, and the landscape is beautiful.

As for the cons, this campaign has gotten a lot of criticism for being too graphic and realistic for players because it involves war crimes, terrorism, and violence. But the main controversy comes down to a person’s playstyle.

Players are angry at how big the maps are for a 6v6 team deathmatch and how it’s way too campy. The spawns are inconsistent and sometimes have players spawn in the enemy’s team, giving them an easy kill. The maps have too many objects in each room, which causes some players to camp in a box or behind a shower curtain. This makes the multiplayer unbalanced and leads to more campers in the game since it seems it’s the cheapest way to get kills.

The extra mode, called Spec Ops, had a lot of controversy before the game’s release because Activision announced that Spec Ops is going to be exclusive to the Playstation 4 for an entire year. This has left Xbox and PC players really annoyed. This issue is ironic because Activision allows crossplay for all platforms, and now there is a game mode exclusive to PS4 for a year.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has many ups and some big-impact downs, but this game has the potential to be the most successful Call of Duty in many years.
