Demon boys basketball lost their state championship game to Albuquerque’s Atrisco Heritage Academy with a score of 61-58 on March 16. This game, the first time Santa Fe High had made it to the championship since 1978, ended a terrific season for the team, led by Coach Zack Cole.

The team defeated Volcano Vista 55-49 in the semi-finals of the State 5-AAAAA tournament on March 14. The boys won the quarter-final game against Eldorado High School, 64-56, the day before, and beat Manzano on March 9 in the first round of the State Tournament at home, 69-55.

Their overall regular season record was 20-7.

The team also beat Capital High 69-59 in the District championship, making them the fifth seed in the state tournament. “We practiced for this,” said senior guard Antonio Lovato. “We need to focus on the state tournament.”

At the time Coach Cole stated, “We should not be celebrating yet, but we should be focused on winning the state championship.”

The girls also made it into postseason play this year. They finished their season with a record of 11-15 but were eliminated from the 5-A district tournament when they lost to Capital 57-39.

Varsity girls coach Nate Morris said, “Our season did not finish the way we wanted it to. We will definitely do better next year.”
