The 91st annual Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 24 aims to recognize talents in film through various award categories. But, as with every large event based on opinion, it’s bringing lots of controversy.

The buildup toward this year’s awards has certainly been rough. Much of it began back in August when the Academy announced the new Popular Film category, which was criticized for being an excuse to give superhero movies an award as many have complained about in the past. After all the backlash, the Academy killed the Popular Film category, but that isn’t the end of the mistakes they has made this year.

In early January, the Academy announced the nominees for all categories, but out of all categories, Best Picture was probably criticized the most. The Best Picture nominees were the following: Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, The Green Book, Vice, A Star Is Born and Roma.

Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther are among the more controversial of films in the Best Picture category this year.

Bohemian Rhapsody faced criticism when it was first released. As Owen Gleiberman from Variety wrote, “The movie, despite its electrifying subject, is a conventional, middle-of-the-road, cut-and-dried, play-it-safe, rather fuddy-duddy old-school biopic, a movie that skitters through events instead of sinking into them.” David Ehrlich from IndieWire wrote, “More often than not, the film makes you feel like you’re watching a group of talented actors cos-play Queen’s Wikipedia page, all of them fudging the facts whenever they get too close to making these rock legends seem like real people.” Because of all this criticism, people question its inclusion in the Best Picture category.

Nominating Black Panther for Best Picture has been heavily criticized as a political move by the Academy, since it has been under fire in recent years for not recognizing the works of people of color and for the awards ceremonies that have featured mostly white hosts. Black Panther is also the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture, and many are speculating that it was originally meant for the Popular Film award, but after the backlash they had to make it a Best Picture nominee.

In early January, the Academy announced that there would be no main host for the event. Their first choice for the host would have been Kevin Hart, but after his homophobic tweets from about 10 years ago resurfaced, he was dropped as a candidate. The Academy has instead decided to have multiple A-list actors present different awards.

Then, just a few weeks ago, the Academy announced that the Cinematography, Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling awards would be presented during commercial breaks in an effort to reduce the length of the show, in response to declining viewership over the past few years. But this decision was reversed after many filmmakers, including Guillermo Del Toro, Edgar Wright, and Spike Lee, asserted that the Academy was discrediting these awards, making them appear as if they mattered less than the others.

Overall, the road leading up to the 91st Academy Awards has been rough, and only time will tell if this will actually affect the viewership of this year’s Oscars.
