The JV Demonettes basketball team won the championship and tournament at Robertson High School in Las Vegas, N.M., on Nov. 24.

In the first game, the girls defeated Raton High School, 51-9. That evening, they defeated Robertson, 52-38. “We play hard till the buzzer no matter the outcome,” said Annika Espinosa, a guard.

The team also won the championship game against Santa Rosa, defeating them 64-29. “We did our best and it paid off,” said Cheyenne Gallegos, a guard.

Coach Kampsky explained that the girls were victorious despite the small amount of time they had to prepare for the tournament. “We only had one day to prepare,” explains Coach Kampsky. “We mostly did conditioning and warming up. “I mainly focused on getting up and down the floor faster than the other team.”

“I love my team,” said Brianna Olivas, a post. “We never give up. We work hard to get where we want to be.”

At the Santa Fe Indian School tournament on Nov. 29, the Demonettes were defeated by Capital 54-50 in a game that went into overtime. “We tried our best,” said Mariah Anderson, a guard. “That is all that matters.”

On Nov. 30, they played against West Las Vegas High and won. The next day, they beat Santa Fe Prep 42-2.

As of Dec. 4, the Demonettes’ record is 3-1 overall. (There have been no district games yet.)
