Behind the Scenes With Demon Country’s “Grandpa”
November 8, 2018
Have you ever gone to an SFHS sports event and bought popcorn or a Coke at the concession stand? Have you ever gone to a softball game and looked at the beautifully maintained field? Have you ever wondered about the older gentleman who often collects money for the games in the gym? Well, there is a man behind the many little things that end up being really big in these sporting events.
This man’s name is Andrew L. Villa, better known as “Grandpa.” He got his nickname in 2008 when he was helping to coach Demon softball. His granddaughter was on the team; she would call him “Grandpa,” and it just stuck. He still helps to coach the team.
About four years ago, Grandpa found out that he had heart failure. He shared that he now needs a pacemaker to help keep his heart beating steady. “It really slowed me down,” he explained. But, he added, “You guys keep me alive. Coaching you guys really brings me joy.”
Ten years later, a happy and joyful Mr. Villa is still sticking around. He could be retired and relaxing, but he chooses to stay with the kids. His first five years with the school were volunteer work, but now he is paid a small amount to work the concession. He also continues to keep pushing and helping out with the softball program.
“I would like to be here for the softball program. I will do anything to help in any way that I can,” Grandpa said.
