11 Easter Eggs in the Fallout Games
October 4, 2018
Easter eggs are little inside jokes or secrets that developers put into video games that players can find. There have been countless found in games over the years. The ones that stick out are the ones that players least expect, like in the Fallout Wastelands of the Future.
Created by Bethesda Game Studios, Fallout is set in the late 2000s in another universe where players are survivors in wastelands such as the Commonwealth, the Mojave Wasteland, the Capital Wasteland, West Virginia, etc.
Here is a list of some of the many Easter Eggs players might encounter in the world of Fallout.
- Pickman’s Gallery / H.P. Lovecraft.
Found in the Commonwealth in Fallout 4, Pickman’s Gallery isn’t a normal gallery. Here is where a plethora of raiders will see their final days. Saving Pickman would have him saying “Thank you” and giving the player a key to access his hidden safe to get a knife called “Pickman’s Blade.” Although killing him and looting his corpse would lead to the same safe, keeping Pickman alive would result in more and more raiders dying for his art. He and his “gallery” are located in Boston’s North End near the Old Church.
Pickman’s name and his gallery came from the H.P. Lovecraft short story “Pickman’s Model,” about a disturbed artist who creates ghastly paintings.
- The Dunwich Building / H.P. Lovecraft
Found toward the south of the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3 is the Dunwich Building. Here a player can bring the book Krivbeknih, during the quest called The Dark Heart of Blackhall in the DLC Point Lookout. The player is tasked with collecting a book for Obadiah Blackhall that has been stolen by swampfolk, but once the player leaves his home, they will be greeted by a mercenary who instructs the player to get rid of the book since it’s no good. Choosing to give it to Blackhall won’t provide any easter eggs despite the book itself and where it leads to.
When the player heads back into the Capital Wasteland, they will have to go to the Dunwich building. Once the player enters, they can see flashbacks from the pre-war era, which escalate as the player goes deeper into the building. The player will then find hollotapes from a ghoul named Jamie Palabras, who went in looking for shelter and for his father. But once the player goes into the basement and kills the feral ghouls, along with Jamie, who has succumbed to his insanity, the player can place the book onto the rock pedestal, which will burst into a radioactive flame. This is in reference to “Cthulu Mythos,” by H.P. Lovecraft. The building the player brings the book to is tied to what happens in the short story.
- The Kings / Elvis Presley
Found in Freeside near New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas, the Kings are a gang that keep Freeside safe. Their base camp is in an old pre-war school called The School of Impersonation. The King, the leader of the group, found this along with some Elvis Presley memorabilia. He believes that Elvis was some kind of god, so each of the Kings is dressed up as versions of Elvis. Apparently, they love the king of rock.
- Wild Wasteland perk / Many easter eggs
The Wild Wasteland perk can be obtained in Fallout New Vegas and will go off at random points in the game. One of the most memorable of these is a fridge the player can find outside Goodsprings. It’s a skeleton of none other than Indiana Jones from The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Apparently, he didn’t survive the blast as it appears in the movie.
But that’s not the only weird thing the player can see with this perk. Further down south near the bunker for The Followers of the Apocalypse is a flying saucer. Getting closer and hiding in cover, the player can see three aliens, one being the captain. Some say that killing the captain would render the other aliens harmless. This, however, is false. The aliens are hard to kill, but the player obtains an alien blaster if successful. While equipping the NCR (New California Republic) Emergency Radio, there is a chance that the player will hear one of the NCR operatives saying, “Game over, man, game over!” and “They’re coming out of walls, they’re coming out of the goddamn walls!” These are direct quotes from the movie Aliens.
- Benefit or a Hazard and Built to Destroy Perk / Blade Runner
The Gun Runners challenge from Fallout New Vegas “Benefit or A Hazard” is a line from the film Blade Runner, spoken by Harrison Ford: “If they’re a benefit, it’s not a benefit or a hazard. My problem.” The description of the perk Built to Destroy contains a reference to the line delivered by Joe Turkel: “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.” Eldon Tyrell (played by Joe) was quoting the Chinese philosopher Laozi.
- You Don’t Belong In This World / Castlevania
In Fallout New Vegas, there is a little miscellaneous quest called “You Don’t Belong in this World.” The player must kill ten abominations with katanas, dynamite, machetes, throwing spears, throwing knives, and throwing hatchets. This is a reference to a quote by Richter Belmont about Dracula and the minions of Dracula. Another Gun Runners’ Arsenal challenge, “The Same Could Be Said of All Religious Weapons,” references this conversation as well.
- Takahashi / Blade Runner
Once the player enters Diamond City in Fallout 4, the player can order noodles from a robot named Takahashi. He will ask, “Nani ni shimasho ka?” In Japanese this means, “What should we order?” This is what two characters in the movie said while in a restaurant.
- Leather Armor / Mad Max
The Leather Armor in the first Fallout games up till New Vegas looks very similar to the one from Mad Max. It seems like the apocalyptic world of Mad Max fused into the radioactive world of Fallout with this light armor.
- Dunwich Borers / H.P Lovecraft
H.P. Lovecraft strikes again with the Dunwich Borers. Owned by the people in N.2, the Dunwich Borers has a similar effect on the player — as the player goes deeper into the mine, the player see flashbacks of the past. In one of the raider’s terminals, the player could find a log from one of them. All it repeats are the words, “I’m safe in the light.” Upon entering a big room, the player sees one last final flashback, the sacrifice to the one hidden in the pool of water down below. It was that of an iron head.
- Officer Kenny / South Park
Kenny, from the show South Park, is the one who always ends up dying, with both Kyle and Stan pulling their normal catchphrases, which cannot be repeated here. If the player goes to the hub in the first Fallout game and kills officer Kenny, a text box will show up that says, “Oh my God, you Killed Kenny!”
- Thugs in Old Town / Jack Nicholson’s Joker
This occurs in the first Fallout game. While entering Old Town, players will find thugs. Occasionally they will say, “Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?” This is a direct quote from Batman’s Joker character, played by Jack Nicholson, who says that many times, which has become his most iconic line. Of course, this happens only occasionally, so the player won’t instantly hear the reference.
There have been many more easter eggs in the Fallout series, but these are the lesser known ones. If you know even more, you might need a better hobby than playing video games.
