The Demons won a very close homecoming football game against Bernalillo 17-15.

With Santa Fe High coming into the game with a record of 1-3 and Bernalillo with a 4-0 record, Bernalillo was expected to win the game, which took place Sept. 21 at Ivan Head Stadium.

The first quarter was a low scoring but close game. Santa Fe High was able to sack Bernalillo in the endzone for a safety while also holding Bernalillo scoreless.

The second quarter saw Santa Fe High score with a touchdown, leaving the score 9-0 for the Demons. A couple of plays later, Santa Fe High was able to get another safety to make the score 11-0. The quarter ended with again Bernalillo scoreless.

The third quarter started off with a quick score by a Bernalillo touchdown and two-point conversion, making the score 11-8 for Santa Fe High.

The fourth quarter was easily the craziest part of this game. It started off as a touchdown for Santa Fe High, making the score 17-8. But that score didn’t last long as Bernalillo came back with a touchdown making the score 17-15. With three seconds left on the clock, Bernalillo set out to kick a 63-yard field goal. But it ended up missing, giving Santa Fe High the win over Bernalillo.

While last year was not Santa Fe High’s best year record wise, this football program seems to be turning around. The team has won two games this year, so far making their overall record 2-3.

“That’s the tough part about still learning to win — we’d like to be a little bit cleaner,” said Demon head coach Andrew Martinez. “I’m feeling very comfortable with my offense.”

Luke Jaramillo played his first ever whole game as quarterback. “The game is slowing down for me,” he said. “It’s just adjusting to the speed is difficult at first.”

Santa Fe (2-3) will play St. Mikes (1-3) next, at Ivan Head Stadium on Fri., Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. (Although this is at Ivan Head, it is considered a home game for St. Mike’s.)
