Hundreds of students from across New Mexico gathered at the State Capital Building on Feb. 7 to observe not only the active legislative session, but also to hear about the program each student was there to join: Model Legislature.

Sponsored by the YMCA, Model Legislature is a nationwide program for high school students. From Forum to Legislature, Judiciary to Governor’s Cabinet, the program offers students insight into the workings of state government and gives them opportunities to explore and develop views on the issues that are most important to them.

At Santa Fe High, the program is led by Mr, Pederson, who also teaches School Governance, Government and Economics, World History, and New Mexico History.

Mr. Pederson said, “I have seen this program change students’ lives.”

The club introduces members to a variety of people from all over the state, from senators to fellow students, many of whom are on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Nonetheless, Model Legislature creates an environment of healthy political debate that allows students to better understand and reconcile different viewpoints.

Third-year participant Peter Messerer said, “It taught me how to be respectful while debating and also helped my confidence.”

This culture of respectful and professional debate can be seen across almost all branches of the club and was a highlight of the meeting on Feb. 7. Students were introduced to the ways they could participate in the mock government that would convene on April 5, and all shared a unifying characteristic of sponsoring discussion and professional decorum.

Sophomore Justin Reynolds, who joined the program this year, said, “I like the people and the professionalism, along with the dedication from just about everyone who joins.”
