Senior Lucas Sedillo was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross award for outstanding achievement in the ROTC program.

Lucas earned the award in Region 9, which extends from New Mexico to Tennessee. This region has approximately 7,000 ROTC members, and only two win the award each year.

Lucas’s academic supervisors nominated him for the award in July. He is the first SFHS student to ever win the award, which was presented to him in October.

Chief Patricia Schipp, a Naval science instructor for the NJROTC program, said Lucas is “one of the most focused and driven young men as far as knowing what he wants for his future.”

After graduation, Lucas will join the U.S. Army as an intelligence analyst for the Rangers.

“The ROTC program has allowed me to go beyond my comfort zone and enhance my leadership abilities,” he said. “In fact, this year I’m the executive officer [second in command], something I never thought I’d become.”
