A New Call of Duty or the Worst Money-Grabbing DLC yet?

Torin Sammeth, Writer

The next Call of Duty was recently announced, and to no one’s surprise, and everyone’s dismay, it is again placed many years in the future.

The original creators of the series, Infinity Ward, are developing this year’s game, Infinite Warfare. It was also announced that a remake of Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare, would be included in deluxe packages of the game.

Many people seem more excited and hyped about the almost ten-year-old game, Modern Warfare, coming out with improved graphics and dedicated servers than the release of a brand new Call of Duty.

But why is this?

For me, the past few Call of Duty games all being futuristic moves away from the core idea of a Call of Duty game; they no longer scratch that itch for a twitchy, fast-paced shooter that Call of Duty was in the past.

Infinite Warfare is again set in the future, continuing the trend of moving away from the core elements of a Call of Duty game. At this time the trailer for Infinite Warfare has more than a million dislikes on YouTube. In the past, Call of Duty players have relied on skill and practice to go on massive streaks that were both impressive and rewarding. As new movement features were added to fit with the futuristic setting, even the best players could not stop people from coming up behind them with lightning speed, ending the skill-based streaks that are such a big part of this game series.

As the new year came and a new Call of Duty with it, there was a lot of talk in the community about how a WWII Call of Duty would be the best. This theme would allow for a simpler game that was more true to its roots. Instead of an unskilled player flying around the map, occasionally getting behind someone as in the recent Call of Duty games, this setting, with only basic movement features, encourages a skillful play style that rewards players for accurate shooting, map knowledge and team work. Instead of just spiriting around the map as fast as possible.

The COD community is also unhappy with Infinity Ward because of how you are required to purchase Infinite Warfare to get the Modern Warfare remake. It is not possible to purchase it as a stand-alone game; you can only get it if you buy Infinite Warfare as well. Gamers are not stupid and are well aware that this system is only in place to make more money for Infinity Ward and to get more copies of Infinite Warfare out the door. Some gamers are even refusing to buy the game because of this, but on the other hand many people are just sucking it up and paying the increased price to get Modern Warfare, myself included.

The moment I get my hands on this game, I will be jumping on to Modern Warfare, and not even looking at Infinite Warfare until probably months later when I have had my fill of the good old Call of Duty days.

However, the developers need to be aware that if they do not create games the community wants and keep squeezing their players for more money, they are not going to last much longer. Game developers depend on the community of their game to keep the game going long into the future. Without a community, a game dies almost instantly. My guess is that this newest could be one of the best-selling Call of Duty games, but only because of the Modern Warfare addition. Gamers are tired of a futuristic setting , they are tired of the same game being made for the past five years, and they are tired of game developers doing everything to get every cent out of their pockets. Infinity Ward need to realize that if they want to survive.
