The WAVE club has existed for twenty years in the Santa Fe Public School District, and Ms. Chacon, our Santa Fe High counselor for juniors and seniors with the last name initials M-Z for the 2024 to 2025 school year, has been working with the club for almost all of those twenty years, with an estimate of seventeen or eighteen years dedicated to WAVE. She was first introduced as a sponsor for WAVE when her old workplace, Saint Michaels, was requested to start the club by SFPS, however, the club was named something else. Chacon was then reintroduced as a sponsor to WAVE once she moved to Santa Fe High, where she remains proud to be the sponsor because of the continuity of the members. The club is dedicated to promoting positive behavior and providing support within the school. As well as that, the club volunteers community service to help better the community, going beyond just the school. WAVE does this by promoting safe dating during homecoming, promoting suicide and gun violence prevention, volunteering with Food Depot to provide food drives, volunteering to provide coat drives, and doing a yearly Spring Campus Clean-Up. In fact, the coat drive still has many coats left over from the previous volunteer event. The club is searching for new members, so if you are searching for a new club here are some reasons why you should join the WAVE club; the club offers a chance to be involved with your community by volunteering, WAVE promotes an overall positive message, most of the activities are done at school and rides are provided, and if you are already not involved with a club, even one new club perspective will better your high school experience. Chacon claims, “If we are that one thing then hopefully we make a difference.”
