Mr. Wilson is the band director at Santa Fe high school. This will be Mr. Wilson’s second year as the band director for Santa Fe High. Mr. Wilson is originally from Austin, Texas. He went to the University of Kansas and majored in music. He loves making music and playing music as well. He has also made lots of drill sheets for the marching band to perform.
Mr. WIlson has many hobbies. He likes making jewelry. He also enjoys Baking as a stress reliever and also shares all of his delicious treats with the band. He expresses how all of his family is musical and how he was just born into music, it has been in his family for at least seven generations. He started playing the piano when he was four all the way until sixth grade when he switched to the euphonium, which he still plays often.
Mr. Wilson loves how creative the bands can be and how interesting all the people are when it comes to music. He says, “I am kind of living vicariously through the band and trying to build a program that I wanted out of my high school experience.” One thing he enjoys is, because he is in charge he can make music for all kinds of different songs and even his favorite songs. He believes in the band and even though he has high expectations, he still believes they can accomplish challenging things. Mr. WIlson believes in the community as a band, sure the music is nice and winning competitions is nice, but he would much rather have a band who supports each other and makes band a fun and safe place. He does expect greatness and he truly believes that everyone is capable of it.
One of Mr. Wilson’s goals is to raise that level of competitiveness and skill in the band. But what also comes with that is not letting the environment become a place of stress and cause for anxiety. “Nobody plays an instrument to sit in their room and play it alone. Band is a social thing, you make music with people and for people.” One thing Mr. Wilson is proud of the band for, is the way that everyone is one big team and family, they rally around each other and look out for one another. The band right now has been putting together an absolutely wonderful show and is coming together so well. He is very proud of how quickly the band has been able to do this and how they have made him work a lot harder so he can make new marching sets for the show.
