The Wave Club provides opportunities for high school students to help out their peers, both in school and around the community. WAVE, which stands for Wellness Ambassadors to Voice & Empower, is a student-driven program at 13 participating middle and high schools.
WAVE promotes various causes throughout the school year, including safe dating, gun violence prevention, and suicide prevention. The club recently won first place in the city clean-up funded by the governor, for cleaning up Salvador Perez Park.
“We are here for supporting our peers, making them more aware,” states Mari Chacon, an SFHS counselor who is one of the club’s sponsors. “We are here to help support people. It goes beyond, ‘If you see something, say something.’ ”
The club started 20 years ago, though it was first called SQUADS and then SWAT. In 2018, the name was changed to WAVE.
The Wave club is actively looking for new members as most of the members this year are seniors. See Ms. Chacon, in the counselor’s office, if you are interested.
