The SFHS Student Youth and Government Club (YAG) took to the Roundhouse on Wed., Feb. 7, to engage in a mock Senate debate over New Mexican House Bill 171, which seeks to restructure high school graduation requirements.

The goal of HB 171 is to incentivize higher rates of attendance by allowing for customization of course selection for students entering ninth grade in the 2025-26 school year.

HB 171 passed on the Senate Floor in a 40-0 vote on Wed., Feb 7, and awaits signature from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

SFHS student Landen Kessler acted as President of the Senate while other members of Student Youth and Government, “vigorously debated the merits [of the bill],” according to Youth and Government Advisor Leslie Karasic.

Another SFHS student and YAG member, Maya Harris, introduced HB 171 to the floor for debate as its sponsor.

Former State Senator Shannon Robinson hosted the debate and was very impressed with all participating students. He told Ms. Karasic that he had faith in the future because of what he saw from the SFHS YAG.

According to Ms. Karasic, he encouraged everyone to continue their participation in government and also told stories of the good old days of backroom politicking.

Great job to these students!
