Bingeworthy on Netflix: Never Have I Ever

After watching what seems to be every TV show on Netflix, quarantine has called for a new level of boredom. Fortunately for everyone, Netflix has released a new light-hearted and family-friendly series called Never Have I Ever. Not only can the show give you and your family a good giggle, but it deals with themes all high schoolers can relate to.

It tells the story of Devi Vishwakumar and her struggle to balance her Indian culture and her life as a high school sophomore. Based on funny and relatable themes with an interesting and compelling plot, this is certainly one of the best series to binge-watch with your family.

To start, Davi and her two besties are quite the characters — all charming, witty and, of course, hilarious. The writers knit together the seriousness of culture versus societal norms of high school perfectly. Within this battle for balance, we see Davi’s true nature, where there is lots to laugh about.

Not only is she battling to be top of her class, but she’s also working to impress her family, stay connected with her friends, and get with the hottest guy in school, Paxton. Additionally, she is dealing with the sadness and grief of recently losing her father.

Throughout the series, we see Davi grow as a character and weather her hardships while all getting to laugh about it. Specifically, we see Davi’s mother grow to appreciate and accept Davi for who she is instead of persistently forcing her to follow all aspects of their Indian culture.

Through this, Davi also learns to appreciate her culture, although it may be different from most of her peers’ households.

All in all, this is a great show, well worth everyone’s time, especially in a time where there is nothing to do.
