Heidi Long
October 8, 2015
If you’re looking for Heidi Long, you will find her in the visual arts building of Santa Fe High, sharing her love for art with her students and building a ceramics program.
Ms. Long teaches Art 1 as well as her favorite, Ceramics 1, 2 & 3. “I’m excited to share what I have learned over the years about clay — it’s my specialty,” she said. She would like to show students that they can do anything with clay.
Ms. Long’s introduction to teaching came through her son. “When my son was in sixth grade, his Art teacher didn’t know much about clay. She asked me to visit the class and help out,” she explained.
Since then, Ms. Long has taught kindergarten through 12th grade. She taught in Phoenix for nine years and then taught in Taiwan for a year. She moved back to the states when her daughter was pregnant so she could help out.
Ms. Long’s was a self-employed animal artist for 20 years before she began teaching. Her art can be found in some permanent collections, including the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. (In the art world, she is known by her maiden name, Heidi Uotila.)
In her spare time, Ms. Long trains her Doberman, who has a BH, a title that means the dog has passed a combination of obedience and temperament tests. The dog performs in front of judges off-leash.
Ms. Long is originally from Columbus, OH, and her parents are from Finland. She attended The Ohio State University.

I met Heidi back in the late 70s and early 80s
I got to hunt with her and Dennie and she shared with me her love of ceramics
She gifted me a 10 point buck deer that I still have and cherish to this day
I pray you are well and thank you so much
Scott

Dear Scott,
I saw Hazel had passed away. I had so hoped to visit with her but you know how life gets crazy.
I lost Christopher in a motorcycle accident 7 years ago. Ryan and Crystal are still doing well. Crystal is in Houston Married and has a daughter. Ryan is still single and is in Phoenix running his own company.
I think of all of you and still miss Ohio.
Hope all is well and my condolences for the loss of Hazel.

I have searched for Heidi Uotila, wondering if she still works with clay sculptures.
Heidi gifted me a Bighorn Sheep, #2/500, in 1979. She was driving through Eastern Oregon, late on a Friday night. Everyone else had gone home, and I was closing the service station where I worked when she pulled in…steam pouring out from the engine of her van.
She shared with tears in her eyes, that she was headed to Seattle for a show, and she would have to drive through the night to get there in time for the opening. I agreed to reopen the service bay and look at her van. It was around midnight!
The short version… we were able to come up with parts from inventory to get her back on the road a little after 1AM. She paid me for the repairs, and before she pulled away, she slid the side door to her van open, and said she was so grateful that I stayed to help her…
Pick one!
I chose the bighorn sheep.
It’s been a priceless treasure of mine for over 40 years!
I would really love to get in contact with her, and to day thank you once again, for her sweet and kind gesture.
If someone could forward this message to her, I would very much appreciate it!

In the past I have had 3 beautiful pieces made by Heidi. One I lost in moving, one I gave to my daughter but I have the elephant made in 1986. It is my treasure as was the giraffe I lost.

I also have the giraffe, my paper shows that it sold for $880.00 back in 1995…. How can I find what it’s worth now?
