AI Can Cause Serious Harm
November 1, 2019
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more a part of our everyday lives and in some cases is already causing harm to people. People should know about this because there is already artificial intelligence that fails and kills innocent people, and still more AI is being invented that ends up failing.
According to Konstantin Kakaes, an editor at MIT Technology Review, a Boeing 737 MAX airplane with 189 people on board took off for a flight in October 2018. But during that flight the plane had a broken sensor, which made the plane start to nose dive. The pilots could not straighten out the plane, and in the end all 189 people were killed in the crash.
Five months later, another Boeing 737 MAX had boarded 157 people and once again in flight started to nose dive toward the ground and couldn’t be controlled. Like last time, the AI fought against the pilots and the crash killed all 157 people aboard.
AI isn’t only a problem with aircrafts, but has also failed with cars. According to Aarian Marshall and Alex Davies writing in WIRED, an AI Uber vehicle, a modified Volvo XC90 SUV that had been driving for only 19 minutes, going 40 mph, hit 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she was walking across the road with her bike. The cause for this accident was the car’s radar and lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors which made the car think she was an unknown object. It then thought that she was a bicycle, and it was trying to find its expectation to travel, which led to the car hitting her.
Many experts have been against AI, such as the world-famous mathematician who died in 2018, Stephen Hawking. He said, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.”
