Why It Matters

For as long as Mueller has been heading the investigation, attempts have been made to discredit it — and him. From labeling the investigation “fake news” and denouncing it in its entirety to attacking the professionalism of those who are actively investigating criminal activity, this investigation has been dragged through the mud in an attempt to end it.

However, this is the first time the investigation is being legally challenged. While that challenge is most likely to end poorly for Manafort, it nonetheless detracts from the public perception of the investigation. In addition, this will add to the discrediting of the investigation.
