The Good Dinosaur: Pixar’s Best or Worst?

January 20, 2016

Pixar’s brand new movie “The Good Dinosaur” hit theaters on Thanksgiving. Directed by Peter Sohn and staring Raymond Ochoa the movie focuses on a dinosaur named Arlo and a young boy named Spot and their adventures as Arlo trys to get home to his family. After the absolute success of Pixar’s last film “Inside Out” could Pixar possibly hit another home run? Or will this dinosaur movie go extinct.

The first thing I have to say about this movie is that it did an amazing job of making you laugh in one scene and uncontrollably weep in another. Even though it was a kid’s movie it had me and my friends, a group of 16 and 17 year olds, howling with laughter and then sobbing uncontrollably at various parts of the film. Just thinking about various parts of the film can still make me chuckle.

Another amazing aspect of this film is the animation. It honestly 100% looked like a real landscape was filmed and animated characters were put in. This really added to the charm of the movie and really kept me in awe through out the whole film.

This movie was a really refreshing change in the film industry. These days it feels like every movie is an adaptation, a sequel, or a remake. This movie was none of these things and that was really nice to see. The general idea of “What if the asteroid had missed earth and dinosaurs were the dominant species,” is an idea so simple that I’m surprised it hadn’t been done already and Pixar really made it work.

The way that the humans in the movie were portrayed as dog like creatures was hilarious and interesting. Each dinosaur that was introduced brought a new and unique aspect of the film and the bad dinosaurs struck fear and worry into my heart.

My absolute favorite part of the movie had to be the finale. In one moment there was action, putting you on the edge of your seat. Then in the next moment tears were streaming down my face as my heart was slowly ripped from my chest and crushed in front of my eyes.

Unfortunately the box office would disagree with me. Due to low box office sales The Good Dinosaur is looking like Pixar’s first big failure. Making only $15.5 Million dollars in its opening week, where as Mockingjay Part 2, the other big blockbuster, made $39.1 million in its opening week.

Though Pixar may look at this movie as a failure, I would completely disagree. This is a new and original idea for the entire family to go see. All in all I think this movie is absolutely fantastic.
