K-Pop boy group BTS have been quite a sensation in America recently. The group has been making history ever since their start in 2013, and six years later they made it to the Grammy Awards.

The group most recently made an appearance at the 61st Grammy Awards on Feb. 10, the first ever for a K-Pop group. They were also the first to be nominated for an award.

BTS’s album Love Yourself: Tear was nominated for the Best Recording Package award but lost to St. Vincent’s album Masseduction. Despite the loss, BTS made more history by being the first K-Pop group to present an award, presenting the Best R&B Album to H.E.R.

At the show, BTS took over social media on the red carpet and even gave insights to their upcoming album in interviews. They talked about how the theme for their new album is about “giving back” while also giving thanks to the “Army,” the name for their fanbase, saying that they would not be able to have these kinds of opportunities without them.

BTS is known for their fiery performances and visual music videos. The group’s popularity overseas has made them the most viewed K-Pop group on YouTube and the first to ever win a Billboard Music Award. They’re also the most followed K-Pop group on social media as of Feb. 14, but girl group Blackpink is on pace to dethrone them.

While it may seem that BTS is just another boy band, their music carries deep meaning, and each of their albums has a certain theme. Back in 2016, their albums Wings and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life had a recurring theme of mental health and depression in the music and the videos. In 2017, the group started the “Love Yourself” series, which talks about uplifting yourself and how important it is to love yourself.

Before the Grammys, BTS won the Billboard Music Award for Social Artist of the Year twice, the People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Song and Favorite Music Video, and plenty of music awards in Europe and Asia, for a total of 46.

In spite of the Grammy loss, BTS and the Army took it well, with love and positivity. Due to BTS’ rising popularity, it is expected for them to not only return to next year’s Grammy Awards but to possibly win an award, and with the new group Blackpink rising to fame, it looks like K-Pop music is making its way into American culture.
