Santa Fe High’s chess club participated in a tournament in the Toby Roybal gym on Oct. 8. The A Team came close to winning it all, winning three out of four games. The B Team won two games.

Here is the roster:

A team:

Jack Miller             1st Board

Peter Messerer      2nd Board

Charles Little        3rd Board

Pablo Garcia         4th Board

B Team:

Sean Angel            5th Board

Savannah Cook    6th Board

Sam Wilson           7th Board

Andrew Navarro    8th Board

Teams from different schools all across the state came to compete. Students from elementary to high school played against opponents their age. Each team played four games.

The chess club is welcoming new members. To be a part of the team, students simply have to love chess. There are no tryouts or other requirements.

Chess team members must attend practice whenever they can. Practices are held every day at lunch in Mr. Brown’s room, Sci.-323. The room is also open after school for around two hours. How well a player does in practice determines their placement on the team.

The chess club has three teams that vary in skill, like most sports teams. Varsity is called the A team, junior varsity is the B team, and there is also a C team. However, the C team doesn’t have enough players to compete in tournaments.
