SFHS vs. Your Old School

Jennifer Campos, Author

Luce Robertson – Academy for Technology and the Classics
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“Well I definitely like the number of electives. Back at ATC, you pretty much had marimba, music production, and some computer programming. Here, though, there’s music, art, psychology and mock trial, to name a few.”
What classes caught your interest?
“I liked the creative writing class, which I didn’t actually get into, which is sad, but they have a whole class for creative writing, which is cool. I liked journalism, definitely.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“Well I really came here to make up for the lack of electives. Also I was at ATC all the way from seventh grade, and it was a very small school. There were probably 450 people at most for the whole school, as compared to there being maybe 450 people per grade here. I just wanted to see what a bigger school would be like and experience the ‘high school life’. ”
Mari Lopez – Atlantic Technical College (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida)
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“I like all the sports that you have here. I didn’t have as many sports at my old school. The classes here are a lot more involved with the students. The kids here are more friendly.”
What classes caught your interest?
“Definitely the liberal and performing arts because in South Florida, we don’t have them. We don’t have the different physical education classes in Florida either. You have more AP classes, too.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“The pace, definitely. The teachers weren’t as involved with the students as they should have been. We basically learned things for that week and then we got rid of it. Here it’s a lot slower paced and you can take in the information. [I like] how involved the school is with the students.”)
Jared Smith – St. Michael’s High School
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“St. Mike’s is really small. At SFHS it’s a bigger campus — there’s more room. There are more people and different types of people. There are a lot of different subjects, so it allows someone to become more of an individual because they’re allowed to find what they want to do. We have academies, so if someone’s a dancer they can go dance and all that stuff. … I just like it.”
What classes caught your interest?
“I’m really interested in music, but the kind of music I like is electronic. I would like to become a producer instead of playing instruments. … I just like to be creative. There aren’t really any courses about that here, but it still can open the door to that in the future.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“I didn’t like St. Mike’s basically because of the people. … I had a lot of friends I grew up with ever since I was in elementary school. We’d been friends for a long time, but I got sick of being there. Also the dress code is just stupid. When I had to leave St. Mikes, it wasn’t my choice — it was really expensive. Coming here I get a free education instead of going there and paying a lot money. You can get the same education here and even better, since we have more AP classes.”
Liam Kuziel – Desert Academy
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school
“I like the fact that there’s more than just two groups of people. At Desert it was too small.”
What classes caught your interest?
“Psychology with Eadie. That’s about it.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“I didn’t really like the people.”
Valentine Stanchi – Monte Del Sol Charter School
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“I think Santa Fe High offers more rigorous classes as well as a larger variety of classes, so you’re able to experiment more with what you want to learn rather than taking basic core classes, which I appreciate. … I also like that this school is bigger, so I get to talk to more people, and there is a greater diversity. I just personally like being around more people.”
What classes caught your interest?
“Wildlife science and botany. I didn’t take these ones, but I really wanted to take astronomy and forensic science. It’s just really cool that they offer things like that. Also, AP Studio Art.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“I thought I wasn’t being challenged enough, both in a social regard and in an academic regard. I didn’t really feel like I had the space to experiment or express myself as much.”
Noah Dowling-Lujan – Tierra Encantada Charter School
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“Well it’s bigger, and they have a nurse. They have a soccer field. They have a track field. They have a football field. They have funding. They have classes. They have different buildings. It’s a lot better because of the facilities and the people. The people are cool, but people over there were cool, too.”
What classes caught your interest?
“I liked the AP English classes and other classes. I liked the weightlifting class and the poetry class, and AP U.S. History.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“Well we had a teacher get arrested and another teacher leave. We had a counselor die. I got switched out of my chemistry class in the middle of the first semester. … That sucked. Basically, just all-around.”
Yobani Dominguez-Sosa – Capital High School
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“Probably the diversity.”
What classes caught your interest?
“I haven’t really explored many classes here. I do have the ones that I had at Capital, but I would like to do more. Probably the biggest one that I can think of right now would be choir.”
Amanda Aragon – Moriarty High School
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“There are a lot of things. I like that they have solar power outside and they use cardboard and not plastic. … The students are pretty friendly.”
What classes caught your interest?
“They have drama, which I like, but it’s not my favorite. … There aren’t any classes that really caught my eye.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“I didn’t like that there weren’t many electives to choose from. We only had ceramics. We didn’t have very many choices.”
Hannah Trainor – Santa Fe Prep
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“The work is a lot easier and I get less of it.”
What classes caught your interest?
“My AP English class and my AP Euro class.”
What didn’t you like about your other school?
“It was really hard academically. Here you have a variety of different students. It’s a lot bigger and I enjoy the variety.”
Mya Barrens – Desert Academy
What do you like better at SFHS than your previous school?
“Well it’s a lot bigger, so people don’t know everything about you all the time, and you get to see a lot of different people every day.”
What classes caught your interest?
“Definitely the dance classes, choir, and the performing arts in general. I had heard a lot of good things about the AP classes, so that was one thing.”
What didn’t you like about your other school
“Well it was sort of like you knew everyone and everyone knew you, and everyone knew your business, so that was really annoying at times. You saw the same five kids every single morning. You knew everyone in your grade and half of them were in your English class. We had about 20 kids total in our grade, so you get really tired of each other.”
